Final Report Abstract

Synthetic magnetism in neutral quantum gases constitutes one of the most active research fields in coldatom physics. This project has been organized along two complementary goals related to this rapidlygrowing field. The first part of the project analyzed the role of inter-particle interactions in the presence of synthetic gauge fields. We have focused on realistic scenarios currently available in on-going experiments, in particular on systems with so-called synthetic dimensions. The second goal of this project was to investigate a realistic exploration path towards the simulation of density-dependent and dynamical gauge fields with cold atoms in optical lattices. Although we have continued with our analysis of anyon-Hubbard models (density-dependent gauge fields), we have started a new research line on dynamical gauge fields, and specifically on quantum-link ladders. We have shown that two-leg quantum-link ladders present a surprising symmetry-protected topological phase, whereas multi-leg ladders are characterized by the appearance of a novel disordered deconfined phase.
