Project Details
Meso- to Submesoscale Turbulence in the Ocean ((16) L03)
Subject Area
Oceanography
Term
since 2016
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274762653
The energy transfers in the meso- to submesoscale regime in the ocean result in both up- and down-scale components from complex patterns of flow structures. We analyze the effects on scale-dependent ocean turbulence and tracer transport in order to improve and develop their parameterization in climate models. To this end, we combine ideas from mathematics with theoretical and experimental expertise using in-situ measurements such as drifter observations and the SMT-WAVE telescope simulation to provide cutting-edge diagnostics and modelling of meso-submesoscale turbulence regimes and a new look at Nastrom-Gage spectra in the ocean.
