Gravity Wave Parameterisation for the Atmosphere ((10) W01)

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Oceanography
Term since 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274762653

Project Description

The goal of subproject W1 is the establishment of an energetically consistent approach to gravity-wave parameterisation in atmosphere models, representing the key role of gravity waves in the atmospheric energy cycle by their coupling both to the resolved flow and to turbulence. A hierarchy of gravity-wave parameterisations of different complexity and efficiency is developed and implemented in ICON-a and will be validated against observations and process resolving simulations. Novel key features are wave transience, horizontal propagation, completely flow-dependent sources, and full coupling to the turbulence scheme in ICON-a.
