Reducing Spurious Dissipation and Energetic Inconsistencies in Realistic Ocean Modelling Applications ((05) M05)

Subject Area Mathematics
Atmospheric Science
Oceanography
Term since 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274762653

Project Description

The subproject will develop analysis methods to quantify the numerically induced part of the thermohaline overturning circulation in ocean models. It will also focus on the detailed diagnosis and elimination of energy leakages created by the numerical algorithms of FESOM and ICON. Consistent methods for constrained velocity interpolation will be developed to reduce spurious horizontal divergences in regridded model data from unstructured meshes. The project will provide ready-to-use solutions and collaborate with S1 and S2 on their implementation and application in the production codes of FESOM and ICON.
