This is a proposal for an individual research project leading to the publication of a detailed commentary on the romance of Achilles Tatius Leucippe and Clitophon, which is aimed at scholars and advanced students of the novel and will fill a significant gap in scholarship. The scholarly work envisaged will interpret the primary text in the traditional fashion of a classical commentary and will incorporate important recent scholarly discussion on the novel in general and on Achilles Tatius in particular; it will also advance research on Achilles' novel by taking a stance on various interpretive problems and disagreements, and by offering fresh interpretations, with particular focus on the reception of the novel by its contemporary readers.
