Project Details
Models of the Heroic in Military Self-Portrayals from 1756-1815 in German-French Comparison (D05*)
Subject Area
Early Modern History
Term
from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 181750155
The project aims to analyse self-portrayals of ordinary soldiers and of officers, focusing among other things on the following questions: To what extent is the theory plausible that experiences with violence are increasingly interpreted as part of a heroizing self-discovery of the individual in wars after 1750? How was the immediate experience with death and injury generally treated? Did the transgressive traits of the heroic warrior, which had been suppressed during the Enlightenment, again come to prominence in the 1790s or did they at least again become easier to portray?
