Subject Area Greek and Latin Philology
General and Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies
Term from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 181750155

Project Description

This project will study the significant Latin epic poetry written under Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) from several angles: as part of a contemporary propaganda war, as a model for the heroization (and demonization) of a ruler, and with regard to narrative techniques used to stylize heroes all the way up to the 21st century. In addition to this core topic, smaller studies will deal with the later reception of epic poetry under Maximilian and a workshop will focus on the general heroization of Maximilian in the literature and art of his time.
