The project complements the activities of laser-driven non-equilibrium dynamics by using picosecond ion pulses impinging on a material surface and driving localized electron and lattice excitations. Following the ion source development, ion-pump - optical probe experiments will for the first time directly access ion-induced non-equilibrium processes in condensed matter on ultrashort time-scales. Lars Breuer is a new principal investigator.
