The project investigates the non-equilibrium structural response in solid materials in impulsively driven conditions. Laser-pump diffraction-probe techniques use ultrashort x-ray or electron pulses at x-ray free electron lasers and high brightness electron accelerators. A new facility for ultrafast electron diffraction using MeV, electrons going beyond capabilities of the current generation of MeV-UED instruments, will be established and will become operational during the 3rd funding period, thus opening up new possibilities for this project. Xijie Wang is a new principal investigator.
