Gauge fields and topological states with cold atoms (C05)

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term since 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 277625399

Project Description

Integer and fractional quantum Hall states have a nontrivial topological order. This project studies the creation of strong synthetic magnetic fields in a well-controlled neutral atom system. In particular, we aim at the observation of manybody fractional quantum Hall physics, taking advantage of the large possible coherence time enabled by the use of the rare earth atomic erbium system with non-vanishing orbital angular momentum in the electronic ground state. In the course of the project, we will study the dissipative response of the topological system and investigate finite temperature effects.
