Project C1 will theoretically investigate the combination of topological protection and open-system control with the goal to stabilize useful dynamical processes such as microscopic motors that operate autonomous, i.e. without the need of external control by forces or system parameters with externallly fixed time-dependence. To this end we will also study a new class of non-equilibrium topological phases with autonomously sustained operation cycles characterized by non-trivial topological winding numbers.
