We propose to experimentally generate, detect and characterize entangled states of multiple neutral atoms inside an optical resonator. In order to achieve this goal we will use open system engineering. Rather than completely suppressing or compensating all interactions with the environment we will tailor and control dissipative losses to prepare the quantum system in a desired entangled state. The anticipated outcome of our research is to turn the promising dissipative approach into an experimentally established method for reliably preparing few-atom quantum systems in entangled states.
