Population agglomerations at Tripolye-Cucuteni mega-sites (D01)
Subject Area
Prehistory and World Archaeology
Term
from 2016 to 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 290391021
Project D1 investigates the complexity of social structures and logistic mechanisms that sustained the early metallurgical mega-sites (of 200-340 ha in size) in Ukraine, Moldova and NE Romania. It is, on one hand, concerned with the adaptations and transformations in social relations, economy and land use that underpinned the development of these settlements into mega-compounds and their survival; on the other, it identifies the social processes that led to the disintegration of these communities and the collapse of the mega-sites. In Phase 2, the project will compare the Tripolye phenome-non with the agglomeration processes in the Carpathian Basin through fieldwork and research at new sites.
