Project B1 examines cultural and socio-economic transformations in mobile hunter-gatherer groups that were confronted with different and changing environmental conditions during their colonisation of Northern Europe in the Late Pleistocene. Well-preserved sites from NW Europe, in particular northern Germany and Southern Scandinavia, are studied regarding the dynamics of technological develop-ments, subsistence strategies, mobility patterns, and local and regional interaction networks. The results are contextualised within the record of environmental changes. In Phase 2, comparisons will be made with areas to the southwest and to the north, and economic and ecological aspects explored.
