The sub-project deals with imperial representation and ceremonial by investigating festivities and audiences at the Mughal court. The sub-project thereby takes into account the role of the court and especially the ruler as institution with specific public functions. It furthermore investigates the conditions of the ruler¿s legitimacy and sacrality which were daily staged for the outside world by the public ceremonial. The investigation is aimed at a better understanding of the ideology involved in the self-presentation of the ruler and its change as well as the relation between different elites and the ruler.
