Final Report Abstract

The initial goal of the project was to apply the methodology of Ps-splitting analysis to a global receiver function data set in order to drive a global map of crustal seismic anisotropy. By starting the project, we have realized that the methodology required much improvements. A main part of the project time was, therefore, allocated to the development and improvement of the methodology. Finally, we were able to provide a global map of crustal anisotropy within the framework of the schedule of the project. We hold the plan to complete our data base and measurements in order to provide the global map of the pattern of crustal anisotropy with a reasonable spatial resolution. We can summarize our main conclusion from the project as follows: 1) the study of crustal anisotropy using Ps-splitting analysis of RF requires very careful precautions to obtain reliable and robust measurements, 2) in addition to a good azimuthal coverage of RF at each individual station, spatial coverage of stations is also very crucial need to investigate the lateral pattern and consistency of measurements, 3) such a broad extent project requires a long term plan to be accomplished.
