Polyolefin single crystals (B08 [A08])

Subject Area Preparatory and Physical Chemistry of Polymers
Experimental and Theoretical Physics of Polymers
Term from 2016 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 268730352

In this project the crystallinity of polyolefins is employed as a structure forming principle to generate anisotropic nanoparticles. These particles now available also in larger quantities will be studied concerning self-assembly and solidification to materials. We aim to elaborate a particle-based approach to ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) materials, and overcome the notorious bottleneck of processing that limits applications currently. This explores fiber generation at mild conditions, and 3D printing. Functionalized polyethylene materials will be generated from the extended chain nanocrystals developed in the first funding period. To understand and design particle assembly, the simulation approach will be advanced to particle-particle interactions using coarse grained methods.
