Project Details
The atmo- and hydrophile element (H and halogens) inventory of the Earth and Moon (B04+)
Subject Area
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term
from 2016 to 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 263649064
Origin and processes governing the abundance of atmophile and hydrophile elements in the Earth-Moon system remain poorly constrained. These elements either were accreted and degassed during planet construction or were, at least partly, added during late accretion, after core formation. While the proposed project will gain an improved understanding of the constraints of the recent terrestrial and lunar budget of the halogens and H, it also will investigate their behaviour during giant impact, magma ocean crystallization, and magmatic differentiation. The new data will ultimately provide an estimate of Earth¿s and Moon¿s budget of these elements acquired during late accretion stages.
