Experimental exploration of electroweak interactions in nuclei (B02)

Subject Area Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term since 2016

Project Description

Project B02 provides experimental constraints for electroweak interactions in nuclei and nuclear-structure aspects relevant to nuclear astrophysics. We will focus on the isovector spin M1 strength, the electromagnetic analog of their Gamow-Teller strength, by a complete quantification of the M1 and E1 excitation strength distributions from measurements at the S-DALINAC in Darmstadt and at HIgS, USA. The combination of experiments using nuclear resonance fluorescence and electron-gamma coincidence spectroscopy will provide absolute M1 excitation strengths up to the particle threshold for N=50 nuclei. These data will be confronted with shell-model calculations and will benefit the modelling of core-collapse supernovae.
