Project Details
Three-dimensional structure of African Easterly Waves and organization of embedded convection (C03)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
from 2015 to 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 257899354
This interdisciplinary project investigates the predictability of moist convection within and tropical cyclo-genesis associated with African Easterly Waves (AEWs) in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean. The novel approach looks at the three dimensional kinematic and thermodynamic structure of AEWs and how they are related to the organization of moist convection and the probability that the waves develops to a tropical cy-clone. To achieve this goal, automated, feature-based 3D visual analyses tools applicable to large forecast ensembles will be developed.
