This interdisciplinary project investigates how structured heat sources on small scales influence large scale atmospheric processes. We combine high-resolution numerical simulations with the uncertainty quantification method, the so-called stochastic Galerkin method. It allows us to introduce several random parameters, e.g. model parameters and parameters describing environmental conditions. We investigate predictability of two atmospheric scenarios: (i) convection driven by turbulent and structured planetary boundary layer, and (ii) impact of structured heat sources in the tropopause region on dynamics on larger scales.
