For the initiation of a international collaboration between the TWiSt group at University of Oldenburg and the Theoretical Physics group at the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisa Físicas, we aim at understanding the stochastic aspects of complex systems. The main emphasis will be on different kinds of noise and intended to suit specific applications to empirical data analysis in two fields, namely in nanosystems and in wind energy. In wind energy, we will approach the turbulent character of the atmosphere by addressing the statistics behind wind flow and wind turbine properties which typically have a non-negligible stochastic contribution. In this field, the scope of this project is to develop methods applicable to the analysis of wind fields and wind turbines, that permit to identify actual physical features of wind, in particular their non-Gaussian stochastic features. The second field concerns similar obstacles to these we have just mentioned, but at significantly smaller scales, namely transport phenomena in nanosystems. In this field, the goal of the project is to introduce methods that separate out different sources of noise, namely Gaussian-like and non-Gaussian noise, present in nanosystems and data extracted from them.
