We propose to study coherent precessional switching and damping phenomena in magnetic nanostructures as induced by spin-polarized electrical currents in both the frequency- and time-domain. Samples will be prepared by a novel patterning process based on an undercut mask technique. This approach enables to create large arrays of templates, which allow to quickly modify and optimize both material combinations and growth conditions. Furthermore, this method is suitable for utilizing and probing intrinsic properties of magnetic nanostructures for both in-plane and out-of-plane current configurations. We suggest to address the role of coherent uniform vs. incoherent non-uniform spin wave excitations for current-induced switching. Our investigations will focus on dynamic studies in asymmetric single layer junctions and bilayer junctions with both in- and out-of-plane anisotropies. In particular, we want to explore the crossover regime from incoherent to coherent spin wave excitations as induced and controlled by pulsed electrical spin currents.
