Determination of the physico-chemical mechanism and the efficiency of reactive filter materials to avoid H2-porosity in aluminum casting and to remove particles and H2 from magnesium melts (C06)

Subject Area Metallurgical, Thermal and Thermomechanical Treatment of Materials
Term from 2015 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 169148856

In the last funding period, the basically positive effect of a spodumene-containing filter material on the H2-porosity in aluminium casting has been demonstrated. Now, the focus is on the melt cleaning of alloys containing metallic secondary material. In addition, magnesium will be included as a further base metal. Both metals show a high content of dissolved hydrogen in the melt and are difficult to purify by typical pyrometallurgical processes. Therefore the effectiveness of new filter materials, such as Al2O3-C, MgAlON, 3CaO∙Al2O3, TiO2, will be investigated regarding in the removal of dross particles (Al, Mg) and sludge particles (Mg) while hydrogen (Al, Mg) can simultaneously be bound by means of a spodumene-containing filter. A significant reduction of undesired particles and gaseous precipitates in the castings is expected for both metals under optimal conditions.
