The overall goal of this project is to explore how methods and insights from visual computing can be applied toward answering questions in linguistic research. In the second funding period, our linguistically guided research focused mainly on the identification of otherwise hidden patterns in historical texts, with major work being done on word order and case in Icelandic. In the third funding period, we shift away from historical linguistic work per se to an investigation of how methods and insights from visual computing could be applied toward a better understanding and representation of linguistic structure, including issues of uncertainty, underspecification, and ambiguity.
