Transport processes across cellular membranes (plasma membranes and all sorts of endomembranes) are essential for maintenance of biological activity. Transport comprises the movement of small ions (e.g. H+, Ca2+, K+, Cl-) and larger compounds (e.g. glucose, ATP or dicarbonic acids). The movement of these compounds occurs either via channel proteins or transporters. We focus on membrane bound transporters for the following reasons:
