Project Details
GRK 841: Physics of Elementary Particles at Accelerators and in the Universe
Subject Area
Condensed Matter Physics
Term
from 2003 to 2006
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 273555
Traditionally, the study of the interactions of elementary particles and the construction of theoretical models of fundamental interactions were based mainly on accelerator experiments. Recently, triggered mainly by more and more precise observations, the new field of astroparticle physics has gained an increasing importance. This field subsumes various aspects of elementary particle physics in astrophysics, cosmology and cosmic ray physics. The research competence of the various groups taking part in this Research Training Group is up to now mainly in traditional elementary particle physics, more specifically: the physics of hard processes and flavor physics. These will be the main research topics also in the future. Based on this research competence the Research Training Group aims at taking account of the new developments. This will not only be achieved by lectures and courses: research in astroparticle physics is already performed to some extent, these activities will be extended and will also become the subject of thesis work. In this way the PhD students will receive a training that will make them competent to do first class research in the extended area of research.
