Triadic constellations play a striking role in much twentieth century writing of relevance to cultural studies. Despite differing contexts, a commonly held double conditioning of the third is manifest here. It is a hybrid being that both separates and fuses - that both disturbs and mediates, thus being, as it were, both excluded by and included within the established order. This quality allows us to speak of the figure and figuration of the third.
