GRK 775: Hierarchy and Symmetry in Mathematical Models
Subject Area
Mathematics
Term
from 2002 to 2008
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 273427
This research training group deals with such problems from mathematicsand the engineering sciences, which exhibit intrinsic hierarchicalstructures and symmetries. The existence of symmetry in a hierarchical system leads to a reduction of its complexity. The research training group is located in mathematics, while the problems to be treated are motivated by applications from different fields. The list of topics ranges from basic research (differential equations, wavelets, graphs, combinatorics), mathematical modelling of phenomena in nature, algorithmic questions (parallelization of numerical and algebraic algorithms, multigrid methods), to the analysis of technical processes (automatic guidance of unmanned air vehicles, optimization of chemical process systems). The teaching program aims at providing a survey of the topics represented by the group. This will enable the graduates to act as mediators in heterogeneous teams.
