Although every single organism of the biosphere is shaped by and subjected to the enormous changes associated with organismic evolution, the relevance of evolution is largely unrecognized in the present world view, as most processes act on large time scales. Because of a progressing specialisation in the methods applied by the various scientists dealing with evolution, modern research on evolutionary matters has a variety of approaches, diverging ever stronger. The research training group "Evolution and Biodiversity in Space and Time" therefore aims to connect the different aspects of evolutionary biology. The participating fields are zoology, botany and molecular developmental biology, which are concerned with living organisms, as well as palaeontology dealing with historical reports of evolution. An interdisciplinary collaboration of the different fields is essential as its synergistic effects will presumably lead to a better understanding of the overall picture of evolution and the present biodiversity. The individual research projects are therefore designed to connect at least two fields in which related data sets were collected using different methods. The structure of the research training group also allows the students involved in this program to gain a broader insight in methodology beyond their individual projects. Hence, in this interdisciplinary collaboration not only new aspects concerning research on evolution are to be expected but also that the education of the students will be raised to a higher level.
