The goal of the interdisciplinary research training group is to identify the problems and perspectives of implementation of the biodiversity treaty. The field of research concentrates on areas of conservancy noted in Art. 8 of the treaty. The main starting point is the so-called "reconciliation of interests" problem describing the phenomenon that costs and benefits for maintaining biodiversity are distributed unequally. Thus, it is necessary for the respective instruments to be developed for just compensation. This dilemma defines the interdisciplinary problem for the research training group and implies its primarily social science orientation. The program of study is tailored to a large degree to the demands of the above mentioned complex of topics. In addition to expanding the intradisciplinary competence of the students, it is especially important to foster the essential to work interdisciplinarily in the scientific and politically relevant area of sustainable development. The commitment in the treaty's text to educate experts in this area is thus fulfilled. Besides the proven forms of instruction within the research training group, emphasis will be placed on elements in which interdisciplinary problem solving is supported and trained.
