GRK 602: Future Developments in Particle Physics
Subject Area
Particles, Nuclei and Fields
Term
from 2000 to 2009
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 273011
This research training group represents the joint effort of severalbranches in physics to provide a solid and broad education of youngtheoretical particle physicists which will enable them take a leadingrole in future developments in particle physics. This includes, first of all, all the basic ingredients which are needed to evaluate results of the future linear Electron Positron Collider TESLA planned at DESY in Hamburg. Therefore, the central task is a thorough preparation of the relevant theoretical issues in particle physics. Next we find it important to provide a solid understanding of machine physics, i.e. of all those aspects of physics which are needed to design and to build this challenging machine. Also, the planning and design of the detectors require special efforts in which young theorists have to participate. As the third part, new theoretical concepts in particle physics have to be understood and to be developed in order to be prepared for the experiments to come.Correspondingly, the research training group concentrates on the three lines of research:-- Physics at a Linear Elektron-Positron Collider.-- Theoretical basis of designing and building future particleacccelerators and detectors, with particluremphasis on the supraconducting linear electron positron collider TESLA.-- Future Development in quantum field theory and in mathematical physics. The College is interdisciplinary: the participating scientists belong to different institutes of the Hamburg University and of the Deutsches Elektronen Synchroton (DESY).
