The Technical University of Berlin`s Collection of Theatre Architecture Indexing, Digitisation and Development as Online-Archive

Term from 2015 to 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 271168592

The object of this project proposal is the indexing and digitisation of the Collection of Theater Architecture owned by the Technical University of Berlin: On behalf of the ¿General Construction Inspector for the Reich capital¿ (Generalbauinspektor für die Reichshauptstadt) - Albert Speer - between 1939 and 1941 a publication of a handbook entitled "The German Theatre" was prepared, showing detailed architectural and technical descriptions of all the theaters of the former german empire. The unpublished collection consisting of 317 folders with about 6000 pictorial materials (floor plans, sections, photographs and written documents) shows in a unique way the status quo of the theater building landscape - like a singular section trough a short time slot (1940-41) after the visionary developments of the 20s and the dismantling during Nazism. The two aims of this interdisciplinary research ¿ preservation in high-resolution digitization and permanent storage on the one hand, improved access by providing an online database along with geo-referencing on the other hand - complement each other. The networking with other international platforms should stimulate additional research in order to reflect interregionally and interdisciplinary in the context of architectural history, stagecraft and scenography about innovative theatrical spaces.
