GRK 155:  Structure?Property Relationships in Heterocycles

Subject Area Physical Chemistry
Term from 1997 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 270251

"Structure-Property Relationships in Heterocycles" are an interdisciplinary field in which research activities of the participating groups join. The topics include theory, synthetic aspects, and the use of heterocycles for the complexation of ions and for switching certain macroscopic properties. Theoretical calculations are performed on transition states in enantioselective syntheses, as well as on geometries and electronic excitation energies of (supramolecular) molecules. (Stereo)selective syntheses, problems in biosyntheses, and mechanisms in heterogeneous catalysis or in electropolymerizations are investigated. The function of light stabilizers and of electrocrystallization additves is explained. The complexation by macroheterocyclic ligands is investigated thermodynamically. Finally switching of flow and phase behavior in surfactant systems as well as of sensor/actor behavior in polymers may be triggered via photochemical reactions of heterocyclic compounds. The teaching program is organized in seminars, block courses and workshops. It serves the aim of an interdisciplinary education of the PhD students that counteracts exaggerated specialization. An equilibrated combination of synthetic chemistry (including photochemistry and biochemistry), theory, and physical methods is taught. The theoretical chemists (traditionally strong in Dresden) offer theoretical concepts practical courses, so that they can be applied to the practical work of the PhD students.
