Theory and models are developed for sparse representations of patterns in atmosphere and land-surface coupled systems, and applied for studying pattern interactions. We will examine how sparse representations can describe pattern interactions between different scales and quantities, and whether they can be interpreted on the basis of physics understanding. The methodology will be applied to large-eddy simulations, ground-based remote sensing observations, and satellite data. The results open new opportunities for stochastic-dynamic up- and down-scaling in a range of environmental science applications.
