Real-Time Analysis and Storage of High-Volume Data in Particle Physics (C05)

Subject Area Data Management, Data-Intensive Systems, Computer Science Methods in Business Informatics
Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term from 2015 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 124020371

Project Description

The LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) facility in Geneva tries to find further information about the asymmetry of matter and anti-matter. The generated masses of data are in the range of several tera bytes per second. Because of this rate, the data can be stored only partially and needs to filtered and analysed in real time. This project concentrates on new methods increasing the efficiency. Approaches of hardware/software co-design will be investigated, especially field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and general purpose computing on graphic processing units (GPGPU).
