The aim of this programme is to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching with regard to the central dimensions of institutional change in Europe today:1. the profound transition process of the state, the economy and society of former socialist countries in middle and eastern Europa since the historical turn of 1989/90,2. the ever deepening process of European integration since the middle of the eighties.The graduate programme is providing an academic environment and intense supervision by participating faculty to secure high standard research undertaken by the PhD students. As a group of upcoming young scientists and leading staff in economy and society, they are contributing to the programme's aims by undertaking individual research projects leading to their PhD. On the other hand, they gain a more profound knowledge of concepts, methods and actual results of several academic disciplines by attending to the programme's interdisciplinary teaching programme.The programme was started in 1995 and will be continued until March 2004. It is a cooperation project of the run by Humboldt-University and in collaboration with Free University Berlin.
