Single molecule magnets have been proposed as promising candidates for novel magnetic data storage materials. In recent years, especially those based on lanthanide ions have shown great promise and scientific interest. Progress has so far been based on serendipity. In depth investigations of the electronic and magnetic properties and their relation to the molecular structure are lacking. This project deals with the detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of lanthanide-based single molecule magnets. Especially the electronic structure and its relation to the magnetism will be investigated deeply by means of a multitechnique experimental and theoretical approach. In addition, we have established collaborations with key partners to have access to all essential information. The outcomes of this project will further the understanding of the requirements for a stable magnetization in terms of electronic and geometric structure of lanthanide compounds. Knowledge of the electronic and magnetic properties of lanthanide compounds is indispensable in view of the growing importance of lanthanides in everyday applications such as magnets and magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. Eventually, application in novel magnetic data storage can be foreseen.
