Identified neuronal ensembles subserving spatial coding in the medial entorhinal cortex (A05)

Subject Area Molecular Biology and Physiology of Neurons and Glial Cells
Term from 2015 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 243553651

Project Description

The entorhinal cortex comprises two morphologically and functionally distinct structures, namely the medial and lateral entorhinal cortex. After focusing on the former during the last funding period, we will now study the latter with the aim to better understand the contribution of defined cell types and neuronal ensembles for coding of spatial and non-spatial components of an experience. We will furthermore investigate the interaction/co-activation of local neuronal ensembles in the lateral entorhinal cortex with ensembles in remote brain areas such as medial entorhinal cortex and septum, with the goal to ultimately understand the role of the lateral entorhinal cortex for episodic memory.
