Defined cutting edge preparation by 3D form grinding

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term from 2014 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 265652293

The geometry of cutting edges has a high potential for the optimization of chip removal in cutting with geometrically determined cutting edges. It has a significant impact on the economy, productivity and process reliability of cutting processes. The manufacturing of complex shaped and exactly defined cutting edges by 3D form grinding processes have been implemented only deficient so far. With regard to a flexible cutting edge geometry and a high reproducibility the development of a 3D form grinding process for cutting edge manufacturing is very important. Knowledge about the active mechanisms in form grinding needs to be compiled in order to realize a reliable and economical manufacturing process of cutting edges. Hence the main goal of the requested research project is the development of a 3D form grinding process for the defined and reliable manufacturing of complex cutting edges on indexable inserts, in which the applicability for different cutting edge geometries and cutting materials will be analyzed. Furthermore the impact of the influencing factors on the work result and the process and wear parameters of the grinding tools will be performed. For the technological analysis of the 3D form grinding process, diamond grinding points were chosen which are well suited for a manufacturing of specific defined geometries on geometrically determined cutting edges. The choice of this machining procedure is also justified by a high flexibility for geometries and a high reproducibility.
