Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 17546514
Modern material processing techniques rely more and more on laser ablation processes as a powerful tool. Thereby, the expansion of the plasma plume is of utmost importance to describe, e.g., contamination processes or thrust development. Molecular dynamics resolve the ablation processes very well, but is restricted to small time scales. Starting from those molecular dynamics results, the later laser plasma expansion is described by a coupled Particle-In-Cell / Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method with consideration of thermochemical non-equilibrium, building a bridge to larger space and time scales.
