The main goal of this comprehensive research project is to advance our current mechanistic understanding of the deformation and dynamic recrystallization phenomena in magnesium and its alloys. The research proposed is to be conducted on oriented magnesium and magnesium alloy (Mg-1Gd and Mg-4Li) single crystals tested in different loading orientations via plane strain compression at various temperatures. The interplay between the activated deformation mechanisms, dynamic recrystallization, and texture and microstructure evolution is systematically investigated utilizing sophisticated X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The deliverables of this project will help us to understand and predict the deformation and fracture behavior of hcp metals, and design appropriate components and forming processes.
