Biology and medicine have entered a new area, in which the wealth of genomic, proteomic and small-molecule data provide new means to approach the analysis of molecules that so far have not been in the focus of research. New technologies are allowing investigators to more comprehensively identify missing pieces of complex biological questions.
Increasingly, lipids are recognized as important participants in the regulation and control of cell physiology and pathophysiology. Lipids are linked to such fundamental physiological processes as bioenergetics, cellular recognition and signal transduction across cells and cellular compartments.
The diversity of their chemical structure requires a truly comprehensive lipidomics approach that comprises multiple separation and identification techniques.
The Research Unit has established a platform that aims to characterise the lipid molecular species derived from fatty acids and sphingolipids and their specific biological roles, the expression of related enzymes and functional proteins, and the actions on gene expression. Finally, this may provide novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of diseases.
