In this fundamental study about turbulent flows through porous media the question will be answered whether in such flows there are turbulence structures with scales larger than the typical pore scales. This question is un-answered until now, controversially discussed and very important with respect to an adequate turbulence modelling. In order to avoid all kinds of circular argument by using turbulence models, results will be gained by direct numerical simulations (DNS). For that purpose we introduce a carefully designed model-matrix which will be changed with respect to various geometrical parameters later in the project. Special emphasize is laid on the physical interpretation of the results by introducing new concepts of a pseudo-correlation and a representative volume of the turbulent flow.
