Project Details
Modeling of mass variations down to small scales (C05)
Subject Area
Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, Cartography
Term
from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 239994235
The most important finding of project C05 in the first phase was that the uncertainty in models for estimating temporal mass variations due to atmospheric and hydrologic changes is larger than the precision of e.g. gravimeters and thus do not allow for better corrections at the current stage. Therefore, we will pursue in the second funding period an observation-driven inversion approach by combining spaceborne gravimetry data from GRACE and GRACE-FO, terrestrial gravimetry data with loading information derived from GNSS station movements in a Kalman filter approach based on a regional gravity field parameterisation. Dedicated gravimetric field campaigns are foreseen for capturing major seasonal water storage variations and flood events.
