Final Report Abstract

Ion microprobe measurements on zircon separated from volcanoclastic turbidites resulted in a reliable chronological frame ≤ 850 ka for the sampled part of U1398B (IODP 340). A sedimentation rate of 4.8 cm/ka has been calculated for carbonatic ooze (the local background sedimentation at the site of U1398B in the Grenada basin west of the Lesser Antilles). The results of our petrological investigation of U1398B volcanoclastic turbidites allows the assumption that detritus originated mainly from volcanic centres on Dominica and Martinique. Turbidites deposited c. 410 ka contain amphibole typical for the Pitons du Carbet complex in western Martinique. The magmagenetic model with magma reservoirs at shallow and deeper levels, derived from onshore studies in the Lesser Antilles, is well reflected by our geobarothermometry on offshore volcanoclastic detritus.
