Facies, grain shape and composition of Late Pleistocene, unconsolidated, volcanoclastic turbidites (Lesser Antilles, IODP 340 Sites 1397 and 1398): Understanding volcanic and climatic forcing of submarine mass flows

Together with a PhD student, the applicant plans to study Late Pleistocene volcaniclastic turbidites and debrites, which have been drilled and recovered west of Dominica and Martinique (Lesser Antilles) in March-April 2012 during IODP Cruise 340 (the applicant was ship party member of this cruise). The project comprises detailed analysis of the depositional facies, grain shape, composition of 221 samples that have been taken in August 2012 from cores of Sites U 1397 and 1398. The results will be supported by biostratigraphic and paleobathymetric investigation of the biogenic component in each sample, carried out by the Freiberg research group. Further confirmation of our models is expected from integration of ship board data (petrophysics, drill hole logging etc.) and findings of other IODP 340 research groups (e.g. chronostratigraphy). Focus of the proposed project is a quantitative 3D analysis of the shape and internal texture of volcanigenic grains. Apart from completion of knowledge on the volcanic evolution of the Lesser Antilles arc, we want to test to what extent textural/compositional analysis of turbidites allows for confident assumption on their origin and triggering mechanism.
