Final Report Abstract

We achieved about 50% of our initial aims concerning the development of carbon model atmospheres for neutron stars in central compact objects. We followed two new ideas which was not planned at the outset of the project because of new developments in the field. During the course of the project, we focused on a new idea, the development of the direct cooling tail method, to derive fundamental parameters of neutron stars that undergo thermonuclear bursts. Although that was not a direct aim of the initial project proposal, we are convinced that this new development represents a more fundamental step towards the overarching aim, namely to constrain NS masses and radii. Another new idea that we worked out is connected to the nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources. We concluded that a substantial part of these sources are accreting neutron stars in binary systems. The respective publication had a high impact, achieving 45 citations within about two years.
