High-Speed Digital Signal Processing for Terabit Speed in Optical Access Networks

Subject Area Electronic Semiconductors, Components and Circuits, Integrated Systems, Sensor Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering
Term from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 256461666

Recent research activities in optical communication are focused on high-speed short range connections. Especially the increasing demand for high-speed data centers communication, with the overall goal of terabit data rates, is the driving force. Compared to long-haul systems, where complex optics and modulation formats are used, a simpler approach is necessary taking into account the cost aspect and the use of standard optical components. In this project, the potential of different techniques for terabit data center communication, for link lengths of 1m to 1km shall be studied. Possible approaches here are an increased modulation bandwidth, the use of higher modulation formats, advanced channel coding in combination with feedback and link adaptation. Additionally, different multiplexing formats will be investigated, with a particular focus on the requirements for data center communications. A general approach in this project will be the use of high-speed digital signal processing in combination with standard electrical and optical components.
