Project Details
Information Theory and Ellipsis Redundancy (B03)
Subject Area
Individual Linguistics, Historical Linguistics
Term
since 2014
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 232722074
The overarching goal of B3 is to investigate to what extent the actual choice of speakers between elliptical and full forms is determined by (uniform) information density. Having established and confirmed the strategies »Avoid Peaks!« and »Avoid troughs!« with respect to fragments (phase I) and constituent ellipsis (phase II), phase III focuses on ellipsis in coordination. Since the processing of coordination requires dynamically updating the common ground, coordination ellipsis allows us to observe the information in flux at the interface of information structure and prosody and its impact on UID and ellipsis.
